AEP Delivers Earnings and Revenue Beats in Q3

AEP reported third-quarter 2026 operating earnings of $2.23 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.04 by 9.30%. Operating earnings increased from $1.80 per share in the year-ago quarter.

Quarterly revenues reached $6.832 billion, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.614 billion by 3.30%. Revenues increased from $6.011 billion in the prior-year period.

CFO Trevor Mihalik attributed stronger earnings to constructive regulatory outcomes, growing electricity demand and continued transmission and generation investments. Operating earnings totaled $1.216 billion compared with $963 million a year earlier.

American Electric Power Raises Earnings Growth Outlook

Chairman, president and CEO William Fehrman introduced expected annual operating earnings per share growth of 9-11% from 2027 through 2031, up from the previous 7-9% range.

Mihalik projected operating earnings CAGR exceeding 10% through 2031, based on the original 2026 guidance midpoint. Management also projected 10% CAGR through 2033.

Following strong year-to-date performance, AEP expects 2026 operating earnings at or above the upper end of its $6.25-$6.55 guidance range. Management established guidance of $6.75-$7.05 for 2027 and $7.40-$7.70 for 2028.

AEP Expands Capital Spending to Support Demand

Fehrman highlighted the $100 billion five-year capital plan through 2031, supporting expected rate base growth from $87 billion in 2026 to $162 billion by 2031.

Mihalik detailed planned investments of $37 billion in transmission, $36 billion in generation and $22 billion in distribution. Transmission rate base is expected to approach $70 billion by 2031.

Management emphasized that approximately 90% of planned utility investments are expected to benefit from reduced regulatory recovery lag mechanisms, including riders and trackers.

American Electric Power Sees Contracted Load Growth

Fehrman identified data centers, manufacturing facilities and other large electricity consumers as significant drivers of infrastructure demand.

Mihalik reported 84 gigawatts of incremental contracted load through 2031, an increase of 15 gigawatts from the previous quarter. Of this, 35 gigawatts are supported by firm take-or-pay electric service agreements.

Fehrman also highlighted potential residential customer benefits. Existing agreements could generate up to $21 billion in fixed-cost offsets over their contractual lives compared with the previous $16 billion estimate.

AEP Addresses Texas Investment and Regulatory Timing

During the analyst discussion, Wolfe Research questioned how much contracted Texas demand was incorporated into the capital plan.

Mihalik explained that the $17 billion Texas investment allocation primarily addresses reliability and resiliency. Additional transmission projects associated with large-load demand represent opportunities beyond current spending assumptions.

A Jefferies analyst questioned ERCOT approval timing. Fehrman discussed the pending Batch Zero review and disclosed that AEP had collected more than $2 billion in Texas cash or collateral.

American Electric Power Details Financing Strategy

Mihalik expects approximately $55 billion in operating cash flow over the five-year planning period, supporting the expanded investment program.

Responding to Wells Fargo, Mihalik discussed more than $5 billion in equity forwards and an additional $2.5 billion in potential marketed equity over two years.

Management emphasized financing flexibility and limiting shareholder dilution. Mihalik also highlighted future generation opportunities supported by contracted demand and existing turbine supplier arrangements.

AEP Maintains Focus on Disciplined Execution

Fehrman emphasized established supplier partnerships, regulatory relationships and project execution capabilities as essential to delivering the investment program.

Mihalik reinforced management's commitment to balancing infrastructure growth with financial discipline, customer affordability and timely recovery of invested capital.
